Compress Image

Shrink an image's file size by re-encoding it as JPEG at your chosen quality.

Lower quality means a smaller file. The output is a JPEG.

About this tool

Upload an image and pick a quality level to reduce its file size. The tool re-encodes the image as JPEG — the lower the quality, the smaller the file, with a bit more visible loss. Around 70–80 is usually a good balance for photos on the web.

Compression runs on the server. Because the output is JPEG, transparent areas are filled with white. Uploaded images are processed in memory and not kept afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my image get?
It depends on the image and the quality you choose. Photos usually shrink a lot; images that are already JPEGs shrink less. Lower quality gives smaller files.
Why is the output always JPEG?
JPEG's lossy compression is what makes photos small. If you need transparency or lossless quality, use the Convert or Resize tools instead.
What quality should I use?
70–80 is a good default for the web — noticeably smaller with little visible loss. Go lower for the smallest files, higher to stay close to the original.
